The USAFA Alpine Ski Team is preparing for the 2022-2023 season. The Air Force Academy Foundation is helping raise $6,000 for the team to help with operating costs, such as travel and admission costs to train and host tryouts at Loveland Ski Club, race registrations and associated lift tickets, and lodging associated with competitive travel.
The team has participated in the slalom and giant slalom disciplines of ski racing since the 1960s. The team now competes in the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association.
Over the decades, the USAFA alpine ski team has kept a steady stream of good ski racers despite its small size – a total of 10 cadets, usually five men and five women. Last year’s men’s team had the most successful season since 2009, earning second place in its division.
For the 2022-2023 winter season, many of the talented skiers are returning to the team, and they are hoping to find new talent among the freshmen class. Tryouts were held in December 2022 at Loveland Ski Club.
The team’s 2023 season includes:
- Winter Park, Jan. 14-15
- Keystone, Feb. 11-12
- Loveland, Feb. 18-19.
- Feb. 23-25 regional competition at Bogus Basin Ski Area, Idaho.
- March 6-11, national competition at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, California.
To keep their lodging costs low, the USAFA alpine ski team is still looking for any families that would be willing to host any number of skiers during a race weekend.
